Your Leadlighting & Stained Glass Questions Answered

  • What is the leadlighting process?

Leadlight production starts by cutting individual pieces of glass from different types of glass to form an image or pattern. Lead came is then cut to size to fit perfectly around each piece of glass. The lead came is then soldered together at all joints. Putty then fills the gaps between the lead came and glass, which waterproofs and supports the panel. The putty is left to harden before all the lead came is polished, and the glass is cleaned.

When leadlights are restored, the leadlights are removed from their frame, and the glass is carefully dismantled from the lead came & putty. The existing glass is then soaked in a light acid solution to clean the glass properly. Any broken pieces of glass are recut with glass as close as possible, if not exact. The leadlight panels are then rebuilt using the method listed above with the existing glass.

  • How long does it take?

The time taken to complete new leadlight or stained glass work will vary due to many factors, including the size of the project and the level of detail required. While we can’t give you an exact answer, we are more than happy to discuss your upcoming project with you and even offer a free measure and quote that will allow us to provide an accurate time frame.

  • Who designs your leadlights?

Our leadlights are all custom made in-house by Lucy and Warren Edwards. We are a third-generation family business operating since 1969, so we know a thing or two about leadlights and design. Simply contact us with your request, and we’ll happily design what you need.

  • Do you offer on-site Repairs?

Yes, we can repair leadlights on-site without removing the leadlights from their frames. However, there are many dependent factors, so please contact us.

  • Can you match existing leadlights?

Yes. If you need to replace or replicate an existing leadlight piece, we can do that for you. We’ll even provide a free measure and quote on-site to ensure the replica is precise.

  • What is the difference between leadlights and stained glass?

Leadlight panels are made by cutting coloured & textured pieces of glass to make up a pattern or image.

Stained glass windows are also made up of small pieces of glass held together with lead came; however, the difference lies in the use of glass paint to create an image. The images are hand-painted onto individually cut pieces of glass and then fired in a kiln, making the painting on the glass permanent. Stained glass panels are what you will see in churches & places of worship.
